Before starting my article I will like to say a few words about health.

“Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.”
“He, who has health, has hope. And he, who has hope, has everything.”
“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”

NORMAL MENTAL HEALTH

The word normal is a relative term. What is considered normal in one place or time, may not be so in a different place or time period. Hence defining normal mental health is not only difficult but is also confusing. There is however some commonly accepted models of normal mental health and they are as follows:

* MEDICAL MODEL: this may simply be described as the absence of any psychiatric disease or psychopathology.

* SOCIAL MODEL: According to this model any person who adopts socially permissible behavior is considered normal.

* UTOPIAN MODEL: Wherever individual behavior functions optimally the person may be considered normal. But as this happens to an ideal this is called Utopian.

* SUBJECTIVE MODEL: As per this model normality is viewed as situation where there is no distress or disability nor a tendency to seek help to tackle problems and is similar to the medical model described above.

          ]]>

* STATISTICAL MODEL: This really is a mathematical approximation. Statistically normal mental health falls within two standard deviations of the normal distribution curve.

TRAITS OF A NORMAL INDIVIDUAL

There are however some characteristics which describe the normal man and they are:

1. Accepting reality and being realistic in behavior.
2. Self-awareness and a willingness to increase self-knowledge.
3. Self-acceptance and self-respect.
4. Ability to build relationships and maintain it.
5. Ability to give and receive love.
6. Have an aim and work for it in a productive manner.
7. Ability to have voluntary control over behavior.
8. Is not fixated and is emotionally mature.
9. Stoically accepts the hard knocks of life.
10. Is independent and can earn his likelihood.
11. Is glad to be alive and possess joie d vivre.
12. Is adaptable and gets along with others.
13. Has tact and tolerance.
14. Accepts criticism and is not oversensitive.
15. Possesses a sense of humor.
16. Learns from past mistakes.

TYPES OF INDIVIDUALS

All people can be classified into any one of the following category:

* Normal people
* Neurotic people
* Psychopaths
* Mentally handicapped
* Psychotic.

At one end of the spectrum are normal people. Actually it is very difficult to find a perfectly normal person. He is a statistical construct, which we cannot find in the real world. All of us have some degree of eccentricity and mildly neurotic. The psychopath on the other hand is a deviant person. Into this category would fall criminals, sex offenders drug addicts etc. the mentally handicapped on the other hand are those who are feeble minded and mentally retarded. The psychotic at the other end of the spectrum lives in a perpetually dark and shadowy world inhabited with phantoms and phobias. They are those unfortunate few who are totally cut out from reality and society.

PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER

Ancient Greeks believed that mental disorders caused by two evil spirits called MANIA and LIZA. But it was Hippocrates who gave a rational explanation by suggesting that mental illness was caused by derangement of the brain. Surprisingly BHELACHARA who lived in the 8th Century BC, nearly four hundred years before Hippocrates had proposed a similar theory in his work BHELA SAMHITA.

Modern Psychiatry conceptualizes psychiatric disorders as disturbances of :

* Thought i.e. Cognition
* Action i.e. Conation.
* Affect i.e. Feeling.

In many cultures there are traditional methods of treating such illness which are still followed by people around the world. So whether it is Siberian Shaman or the witch doctor of Africa, many shy away from seeking psychiatric help owing to the stigma that is attached to mental illness. No one wants to be typed a ‘Psycho’ even of absence of medical help is detrimental to health and well being.

Schizophrenia affects around 1% of the population of this planet. It is a chronic, severe, and disabling mental disorder. It has also been recognized for centuries, maybe not with the same nomenclature, but most likely with the same symptoms. However, the complex mechanisms which cause this condition remain a mystery of their own… but for how long?

History of Schizophrenia: from demons to genes

The symptoms commonly associated with schizophrenia are on the records of many ancient civilizations, such as the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. The causes for this mental disorder have been associated with demons, gods, poisonous substances, dark creatures and more – but until today, there are still no definite answers. There is evidence, however, to the different treatments tested (and used) in several patients. Drilling holes in a patient’s skull and performing dance rituals were some of them.

The term ‘Schizophrenia’ (derived from the Greek words ‘schizo’=split and ‘phrene’=mind) was only created in 1911 by Eugene Bleuler, a Swiss physician. Bleuler changed the term ‘dementia praecox’ created by Emile Kraepelin – the German physician who first classified mental disorders in categories – because the disorder was not a dementia. Later on, both scientists sub-classified schizophrenia into categories based on specific symptoms, three of which were delineated in the DSM-III (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders): disorganized, catatonic, paranoid, residual, and undifferentiated. Kraepelin’s classification remains influential and it is the basis of the DSM-IV.

Nowadays, it is believed that schizophrenia is caused by a mixture of gene interaction and environmental influence. However, it is not clear how much influence each of these causes wields.

The Symptoms

The symptoms of schizophrenia are divided into three categories: positive, negative and cognitive.

Positive symptoms are volatile, easy to recognise and normally involve some loss of contact with reality. Hallucinations (distortions of the human senses), delusions (false personal beliefs) and movement disorders are examples of such symptoms.

Negative symptoms are harder to recognise as they relate to some loss in abilities such as planning, speaking, expressing emotions or being motivated. These symptoms can easily be misconnected to laziness, depression or other conditions which involve similar behaviour. The term is referred as ‘negative’ due to the reductions in ‘normality’ – both emotional and behavioural.

Cognitive symptoms relate to problems in normal cognitive functions. In many cases these cognitive impairments are only detected through neuropsychological tests. Such symptoms include problems with memory, attention, decision-making and more.

The Causes

As previously noted, schizophrenia is believed to be caused by a mixture of gene and environmental influence. Davies stated that “schizophrenia appears to be caused by abnormalities in the development of the brain that become manifest in late adolescence or the early twenties, a time when a differentiation and maturation of the central nervous system is at its most complex” (Davies 2005 p. 210*).

However, the disorder is not characterised by a single predominant gene – it relies on the combination of a group of genes, each exerting a small effect. These gene combinations, along with the presence non-genetic factors such as exposure to viruses or drug abuse, play a key role of increasing vulnerability.

Current research is attempting to identify the genes which could be directly involved with the incidence of schizophrenia and psychotic episodes. There are candidate genes – however there is not enough evidence to prove that these genes in fact increase risk. “Some genes that have recently been associated with schizophrenia code for enzymes and proteins that help brain cells communicate with each other.

Some of these enzymes and proteins are involved in neurotransmitter systems that have long been implicated in schizophrenia, such as dopamine, glutamate and GABA. Other genes code for proteins involved in the brain development, while others code for proteins of yet undetermined function”. (NIMH – National Institute of Mental Health**).

Facts and the treatments

Schizophrenia is a chronic and disabling disorder, but nevertheless misinterpreted by the general population. In fact, between 25 and 40% of people who experience a psychotic episode not only recover, but never experience a second episode. In many instances, patients enter hospital care voluntarily, and are able to function normally when not experiencing an episode. Although people with schizophrenia are more likely to attempt suicide, they are not particularly prone to violence or crimes.

Over the last few years, new anti-psychotic medications have been developed – such as clozapine, risperidone and olanzapine. These drugs do not cure schizophrenia, but they effectively alleviate its symptoms and extrapyramidal side effects (such as rigidity, muscle spasms and tremors) which used to appear in older drug treatments.

Psychosocial treatment is also important in the management of schizophrenia. Rehabilitation and substance abuse treatment are helpful in integrating the patient to the society, and improving the patient’s capability to counteract the degenerative effects of the disease. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) can also help. This treatment seems to be effective in reducing the severity of symptoms and decreasing the risk of relapse in patients which symptoms persist even when they take medication.

Furthermore, the efficacy of treatment can be vastly improved with the participation of family and friends. Because the positive symptoms of this mental illness are easy to distinguish, both patient and relatives are able to act when noticing the prevalence of different behaviour.

Overcoming schizophrenia: too far or too close?

The future of schizophrenia runs parallel to most research in mental health. With the advent of new brain mapping and scanning technologies, such as PET, MRI, fMRI and the developments in genetic research – scientists are narrowing their focus to the interaction between neurons and how each of our cognitive functions affect neurotransmission at a molecular level. With this in hand, there are expectations that the approach to schizophrenia will be more specific and efficient – but to predict cure at this stage, is a long shot.

Nevertheless, there may be more excitement in the other side of the spectrum. Identifying the exact gene combination which increases the incidence of this condition, and the role of non-genetic factors, may still seem distant. However, another solution could effectively help the vast population suffering from the symptoms of schizophrenia.

The general thinking is that the best way to combat an illness is to develop a cure. What about instead of finding the cure, combating the symptoms? That is the approach used for most illnesses which cure is yet to be discovered, and it could be a temporary solution to improve the lives of millions. Cognitive enhancers, such as nootropics (cited in a previous edition of this ezine) and cognitive enhancing methods – such as the use of electric waves in specific brain regions – could counteract some of the debilitating symptoms of schizophrenia.

Most of these techniques are still being tested, but they are much closer to reality and have already predictions to reach the market within a few years. Although there have been some studies in cognitive enhancing drugs, new drug classes are on the scene – and brain science and pharmacology are allowing further discoveries in the field. What will be the next step? That might not be the one million dollar question, but perhaps it holds the answer which over 65 million people have been waiting for.

Elderly mental health care is an important issue that affects almost one in every five American adults who are in fact known to be affected by some form of mental illness or the other. These mental illnesses include suffering from dementia and psychosis, delirium as well as depression and schizophrenia.

The disturbing thing about elders suffering from these and other mental illnesses is that they can lose their cognitive abilities and their behavior too will change for the worse and their general ability to function normally too will be adversely affected.

Ignored and Brushed Under the Carpet

Among other reasons why elderly mental health care is required for seniors are disturbed sleep patterns as well as loss of appetite as well as mood swings. Unfortunately, elderly mental health care is a subject that is often ignored or brushed under the carpet because no one wants to deal with things such as mental illnesses though this ignorance or avoidance of providing suitable elderly mental health care can and does often lead seniors to commit suicide which is why specialized mental treatment is required for the elderly.

Elderly mental health care today suffers from many lacunae and among these lacunae is the fact the majority of elders suffering from mental ailments shirk from getting them treated. It is commonly found that such elders will suffer their condition in silence and are ready to put up with many discomforts rather than face the stigma of being known as being mentally disturbed.

Even the society in which we live in today does not respect or show dignity to those that are unfortunate enough to suffer from mental diseases. In fact, many mental health professionals too are worried about the condition of the elderly that suffer from mental problems and these beliefs in such professionals actually impairs their abilities to provide suitable elderly mental health care.

What’s more, the medical fraternity too sometimes trips over in the kind of elderly mental health care they provide and negligence on their part is another obstacle that the elderly have to contend with. In fact, often mental diseases are written off by professionals as being just a case of an aging indicator and nothing more serious.

In today’s day and age a worrying aspect to dealing with elderly health care needs is the fact that the cause of death in the twentieth century is radically different than what was common in the previous century. In the nineteenth century deaths were caused by acute as well as infectious ailments, though in these modern times the main killers are chronic as well as degenerative ailments of old age.

When President Bush signed the financial services bailout bill on October 3, long-awaited mental health parity legislation became law. This legislation requires health care plans to provide the same coverage for mental health and substance abuse disorders at they do for other medical illnesses. For most calendar-year plans, the law will take effect on January 1, 2010.

Key provisions summary

Parity required – Expands the 1996 law on annual and lifetime limits to financial requirements (co-payments, deductibles, coinsurance, out-of-pocket expenses) and treatment limitations (frequency, number of visits, days of coverage) for mental health and substance abuse coverage.

Preemption – Maintains the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standard, thereby creating a federal floor for parity standards and allowing states to enact more extensive requirements for insured plans.

Out-of-network coverage – Requires that an employer offer out-of-network mental health and substance abuse coverage if the plan offers out-of-network medical coverage.

          ]]>

Medical management – Protects plan medical management practices that are vital to assuring the cost and quality of services for covered benefits.

Potential Impact

Modest cost increase. Most group health plans do not currently meet these new requirements. While plan changes would be extensive, the cost impact for health insurance is expected to be modest. Last year, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that enactment of a similar bill would boost health insurance premiums by an average of about 0.2 percent a year.

Positive outcomes. Employers may experience several positive outcomes with improved coverage of mental health treatment. Ronald Kessler of Harvard Medical School along with other researchers have found that mental disorders can substantially limit an employee’s ability to work, thus increasing absenteeism and reducing workplace productivity.

Incentive for early treatment. Researchers frequently cite starting treatment early as an important way to control the severity of a mental health episode and keep the employee at work and fully productive.

Reduced treatment costs. Lower copayments have been seen as an effective way to get employees into treatment sooner. Mental health lobbying groups believe that mental health parity will provide this financial incentive.

To receive the greatest impact from the new mental health parity requirement, the challenge remains for employers to greatly destigmatize the treatment of mental health. Kessler estimated that almost 30 percent of the U.S. population experiences some diagnosable mental health or addictive disorder within a 12 month period, but fail to seek treatment or drop out because they want to solve the problem on their own.

Within each one of us resides the divine healer. All healings come from within and not outside. Once the healer within is set in motion the healing takes effect.

Like all physical problems, health and fitness must be addressed within. The true realization of our health condition being part of our Karma or Actions sets in motion the counter measures -that is corrective actions.

So what can be done to remove stress from our life and set in motion a healing process to attain peak health conditions?

The very simple answer is to attain a balance in life which is in harmony with the natural principles of living. A few changes in the way we think about our body and actions of our daily life from waking to sleeping will see a dramatic shift towards positive health.

Waking up

Waking up is a glorious event in our life which is mostly wasted. The hour before dawn has magical properties. The whole atmosphere is filled with a surge of energy. This is the hour to be out in the open with nature absorbing all the natural energies. Waking up is like a new birth. The body is suffused with new and fresh energies. As soon as you wake up just say ‘today is the first day of rest of my life’. You will feel the excitement of anticipation and hope for all that you can achieve on this first day which can truly change your life.

Cleaning

During the night body has been at work collecting the toxins and wastes into your bowels and bladders. The natural mechanism is ready to eliminate them first thing in the morning. However we have got into the habit of postponing it with a morning coffee or tea. The effort should be finish cleaning of the bowels first thing on waking up. Don’t read in the toilet. You need your attention and energies to be focused on the task at hand which is cleaning up.

Exercise

Much has been written on this. For a general good health and increasing energy levels the one exercise that is a must is a brisk early morning walk. Keep the first 10 minutes of your walk comfortable and as a warm up. The next 20 minutes should be very brisk. The last 10 minutes slow down gradually. Walking alone can help improve any disease or disorder in the body by improving your oxygen intake, exercising every part of the body and improved metabolism.

Bathing

It is not without reason that bathing has developed into a fine art form with cultural and spiritual significance attached to it in many eastern cultures. It is not only a form of cleansing the body but also promotes mental and spiritual health. A good relaxed bath can help relieve stress and fatigue, increase strength, and suffuse the mind and body with enthusiasm and vitality. Stop rushing through the bath, take your time and you will see the difference it makes to your day.

Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However the early morning rush to our work has changed the eating habits, making dinner as the important meal and a social activity. This disturbs the natural rhythms of the body. Body is engaged in digesting a heavy meal when it should be resting resulting in feeling heavy in the morning instead of light and energetic. Start the day with a well balanced meal of cereals, oats and wheat preparations with a judicious mix of fruits. A breakfast rich in proteins and fruits rich in anti oxidants are the best. Getting through the work day

Enthusiasm and love for the work that we do is the best way to feel energetic throughout the day. Go through your work like a mission. Enjoy what you do. When you have fun doing what you do everyday, you are on a constant holiday. A mission oriented approach creates purposefulness and the day is never a drag.

Rest and Relaxation

Television is definitely a big no if you want to relax. Sensation sells and sensationalism drains your emotions. T.V. is full of bad news – wars, murders, robbery, and terrorism. Movies are overtly violent. The best way to relax is to spend time with your family and children, social circles or reading a good book which gives sense of fulfillment.

Sleep

Sleep is still a mystery even to the scientific community. No one can live without sleep for long periods of time. It restores the mental faculties. Physically the body spends the sleep in resting various organs including the heart and the brain. The entire system is rejuvenated and recharged with a good nights sleep. Before bed time it is best not to be overtly excited with television or literature which stimulates the senses. Listening to soothing soft music just before going to bed induces a deep undisturbed and restful sleep. The rhythm of nature necessitates the age old dictum of early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise.

These small and easy to follow steps of balancing the daily activities leads to positive action or Karma which sets in motion healing and health. Live a fruitful life full of productivity with daily regime of positive actions.

Good Health is your Wealth, believe me, it is even more important than your business. After all, when your health is in bad shape, how motivated are you to implement business plans or pursue personal goals? We both know the answer, don’t we? And what happens to your business if you neglect your health and die? Let’s not even go there.

Meanwhile, as obvious as the reasoning above is, most business people carry on as if health is a secondary consideration—like something they would only consider after they have succeeded in business (i.e. made money). How tragic is that reasoning!

To begin with, only the living can succeed in business. Yes, if you die your inheritors can take things up from there. But what if they too neglect their own health and end up like you? So you see, at some point, there must be someone who places the same premium on their health that they place on their business. Let that person be you!

Consider the ways in which healthy living benefits your business. Let’s take exercise as an example. It’s widely acknowledged that regular and meaningful exercise is one of the greatest contributors to healthy living. “And how does that affect a person’s business?” you may ask. Well, consider these:

When a person exercises regularly, it helps to maintain a healthy weight, which allows the body to function optimally, resulting in fewer sick days. For an employer, fewer vacations due to illness is great news. And for an entrepreneur who usually must be there in person before anything can get done, he simply can’t help remaining healthy!

Exercise also helps us to generally feel better about ourselves. Why is this so? Well, it sure takes discipline to stick to an exercise regime. And when this is strictly adhered to, the person gets the feeling that they are in control of their affairs. This confidence often transfers into the business front, affecting the way we approach matters relating to our business.

Good health and exercise also improve motivation. As stated above, sticking to an exercise routine takes lots of discipline. But what happens is that once we compel ourselves to engage in it a few times, we often begin to look forward to it! In other words, regularly engaging in exercise appears to create its own form of motivation. And this motivation is often carried over into other areas of our life—including our business.

Exercise also increases our energy levels and efficiency. By increasing blood flow to the brain, it contributes to mental clarity. Thus we are able to focus better and make better decisions—including business decisions.

Another important aspect of caring for our health involves our diet—the food we eat. Generally speaking, a healthful diet is simply about choosing wisely from the group of foods that are available to us in whatever part of the world we’re living. And in doing so, moderation and variety should be your guiding principle.

There can be no doubt about it: the efforts we make to take good care of our body is one of the best investments anyone can ever make. A healthy diet and a good exercise routine are essential in this regard. A healthy person enjoys mental clarity, greater motivation, self-confidence and a welcoming attitude. All these benefit a person both personally and business wise.

Should you desire to increase your psychological focus, have far better psychological focus, and take pleasure in more powerful willpower in order that you’ve far more triumph within your life, then the essential talent you have to acquire would be the capability to control your thoughts to ensure your brain operates in your instead of towards you. Here, you may find out 3 easy methods that assist you to quickly begin controlling your ideas. Plus, you are able to use the mental coaching work outs incorporated in each suggestion to sharpen your considered regulate capabilities. So, the query is…

“WHAT DOES IT Imply TO CONTROL Believed?”

The facility to management considered will be the capacity – at any given second – to purposefully slow down and discontinue the active, continuous actions of ideas streaming by way of your brain. To generate that occur takes continuous observe at having to pay close awareness to thought itself, and creating willful adjustments to ongoing ideas to encourage positive effects, and forestall adverse ones. The outcomes of executing so involve peaceful relaxation, flawless efficiency, pleasant productivity, accelerated understanding, self-self-assurance, deep creativeness, masterful trouble-solving, plus a profound feeling of very well-becoming.

The extremely very best way to grasp the habit (and get the added benefits) of controlling your ideas is often a immediate self-educating method through mental health and fitness education; that may be, frequently and constantly getting time out of your evening exclusively to training your mind by using strategic tactics that reshape and strengthen interconnecting pathways amongst mental cells. This approach of neuro-sculpting (as opposed to ‘physique sculpting’) affords you greater psychological strength, endurance, and versatility as you produce management and competence more than previously untrained mental faculties capabilities.

Mental teaching by means of dynamic psychological health workouts is incredibly practical in that it teaches you priceless classes about factors within your brain and contemplating of which that you are at this time unaware. Among the first 3 things you find out throughout this method are:

1.This direct, self-educating system of mind instruction exposes the rebellious nature of one’s untrained mind, revealing that despite our assumptions most of us really don’t have skillful handle of our ideas or our consideration, the proof of which becomes glaringly obvious as soon as we try to command our head to obey the orders of our will.

          ]]>

two.It reveals the shocking frequency of psychological distractions rising up out of your subconscious to assault your intellect and notion all day time very long and into your evening.

several. Finally, the process can straight away start to grant you manage around all thoughts which can be at the root of repetitive anxiety, strain, concern, as well as other strength-draining negativities; thereby making area inside your mind available for you to build, foster, and manage the thoughts that convey you what you wish in existence, exclusively.

Intellectually, it may sound sensible, but only as a result of focused education will it genuinely start to generate sense and fall into place inside a way that proves you really can regulate your thoughts. Neuro-sculpting mental workout routines necessitate you to regulate thoughts inside a highly basic, simple way. By way of the small successes you realize with dynamic psychological fitness tactics, you obtain the vital activities that inspire you to confidently increase your work till your full lifestyle commences to vary for that far better. Enable’s take on a have a look at 3 strategies that may present you with manage over your thoughts:

Strategy One – Sign INTERFERENCE

Procedure One is when you produce a second considered INSIDE the very first to break it up. You purely use something to interrupt the imagined you don’t want. If you practice this approach, just sit and allow your head to consider whatever it can, then purposefully craft yet another thought whilst inside center in the 1st. For example, if that you are engaged in a imagined about an business office assembly, visualize a airwaves appearing out of thin air, blasting noisy audio and disrupting the gathering. Focus in within the stereo and it is songs. Finally, all the things else will fade into the background, or fade away. You can feel of lots this kind of scenarios.

System TWO – SIGNAL DECAY

If you withhold your consideration from turning out to be deeply required using a believed, its signal is deprived of participatory strength it wants from you and degrades to fade absent on its personal in a very subject of moments. Sign decay is most popular in yoga and meditation wherein practitioners refuse to make it possible for themselves to get caught up inside the tough river of thoughts, and instead continue to be targeted on an attentional target, which include the sense of their breathing, or a easy object like a candle flame. One particular way it is possible to demo this is usually to determine what your awareness goal is going to be, and when you find yourself assaulted by undesired imagined, aim in on your target, and maintain your focus there by turning out to be extremely interested from the target so that you observe just about every detail about it. Your thoughts will let go of whatever imagined was bothering you in order to reallocate its solutions on the new focus on, and with out that energy, it dissolves.

Method THREE – Signal DISPLACEMENT

It is possible to eradicate an unwanted thought by willfully contemplating yet another, competing believed. If you assume the newest imagined, your brain will wrestle involving the two, but if you’re determined, the believed you produce will inevitably crowd out the initial believed, thus displacing it. You can consider it by straightforward reaching spine into your memory space to recall a pleasant celebration and if you lock onto it, increase it in intellect and immerse yourself into it so as to relive it. All over again, you may should exert oneself, however the result is worth it, since you’ll have genuine-time knowledge that you may discontinue a single considered plainly by resurrecting another. Do it repeatedly, and the rejected considered will shed its effect, and its existence.

For any everyday life-shifting self-education and learning on controlling your ideas, put aside a window of time each evening for thirty days and nights to apply the suggested strategies. In the conclusion with the calendar month-prolonged period of time, you need to be incredibly familiar and able of determining which ideas you’ll enable and which ideas you might no longer permit with your daily life.

Then medical price points started to rise, people began to live longer and the medical profession became adept at curing various diseases and saving and prolonging the lives of shoppers with serious injuries and life-threatening illnesses. Health care and coverage expense began rising that much a good amount quickly than annual incomes and premiums began taxing both employers, who were bringing in the lion’s share of premiums, and for employees, to whom organizations often passed on costs through perfect deductibles, greater out of pocket expenses and higher premiums.

Corresponding to a recent study by the MSNBC News Service, 41 per cent of Americans whose profit ranges from moderate to middle had no health insurance for at least side of 2005. In 2001, that rate was still lower—28 percent. Additionally, a good deal more as opposed to 50 per cent of uninsured Americans in 2005 found it difficult to pay their medical bills. Another alarming statistic—28 per cent of Americans in 2005 had no health insurance, additonally 24 percent had none in 2001.

So, what should a individual do if they don’t have any quality of life protection or if they hold a selection between a cheap mark down plan that performs not payback core rates and an affordable initiative that may cost a bit more but also provides much better coverage? Corresponding to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the majority of persons who are not covered for important screening tests, the as a mammogram, colon cancer screening or a PSA test, will not have those exams. Also, close to 60 percent of persons without vitality insurance missed treatment or did not buy medicine needed for a chronic condition.

All of these figures point to one thing—people who miss health coverage for primary services are frequently incapable to pay for those services, putting them at greater risk for developing new or exacerbating existing health conditions.

What should you give the impression for in a health insurance plan, especially when cost is an issue? It’s important that you get the best coverage you can afford. Skimping on premiums can save you money upfront, but the result can prove to be penny-wise and pound-foolish. Sometimes people can’t afford coverage and sometimes they think because they are sharp that they simply don’t need it. However, excellent people get ill or are faced in serious accidents all the time. You never know when you’ll need coverage.

Some individuals opt for “catastrophic” insurance, which ordinarily covers only major medical and hospital price levels above a specific deductible. Under such a plan, the insured pays for average doctor visits and prescription drugs. With this sort of plan, you’ll pay a low monthly premium but will also suffer a high deductible and limited coverage. Deductibles start at 0 per year but can be considerably more. If you purchase an cheap policy with a ,000 deductible and you undergo surgery that costs ,000, you are required to pay that ,000. If your surgery costs ,000, you would owe ,000.

One insurance company offers a plan which costs per period for a 21 year-old, non-smoking female. There’s a yearly 0 deductible and ,500 in out of pocket price points that the insured ought to pay before the policy kicks in. Hospital, surgical and x-ray price points are covered but other costs, such as doctor visits, prescription drugs, maternity care and mental healthcare are not included. There’s a lifespan maximum of million.

It’s surely a bargain, if you don’t plan on heading to the doctor very often. To enroll in a plan that will cover doctor visits, prescriptions, maternity expenses and more could easily cost 0 per month—a jump of 1 every 30 days for a total rates of ,800 per year!

Group well being insurance plans, which you can ordinarily enroll in through your employer, union or guild, are the best buy. Individual plans, especially people that propose comprehensive coverage, can be crippling to many people’s pocketbooks. When buying health insurance, it’s important to shop around. Your choice of what type of plan you purchase would be determined by what you can afford and what you need as far as indemnity is concerned. There’s no ideal or wrong choice when it comes to health insurance but at the very minimum you should have catastrophic insurance policy.

There are basically 3 sorts of plans—Fee-For-Service, Health Maintenance organizations (HMO) and Preferred Provider organizations (PPO). Fee-For-Service plans post the various choice regarding doctors and hospitals but properties frequently involve quite a bit of paperwork and are the most costly. If you’re willing to give up some or a lot of choice, do less paperwork and save certain money on premiums then either a HMO or a PPO is for you.

A HMO supplies the least rate of choice, involves co-pays, has the least total sum of paperwork and is the cheapest of the 3 types of insurance. A PPO combines some elements of Fee-For-Service and a HMO. You’ll have funny things choice than you can with a HMO but less than you would with a Fee-For-Service plan. It tends to be more pricey than a HMO but less expensive than Fee-For-Service. All three sorts of protection hold some aspect of Managed Care—which determines how even health care you can use—attached to them, investing in Fee-For-Service going through the fewest limitations and a HMO being restricted the most.

When shopping for quality of life insurance ask the following questions—

* How much is the premium?
* What services are covered?
* What are the total deductible and out of pocket expenses per year?
* How much are the co-pays?
* What is the maximum life-time benefit?
* How much freedom may you have when picking doctors and hospitals?
* What are the pre-approval procedures for seeing specialists, undergoing a procedure or making looking at a test?
* What prescription drugs are covered and to what grade?
* Is mental quality of life covered and to how point?
* Is dental covered and to what point?

As you start to narrow down your choices, you can look more closely at exact plans the seem to fit your requires and determine which offering you the best rate for your dollar?

America has one of the finest healthcare organizations in the world and one of the most complicated health insurance policy systems across the globe. oftentimes, properties give the impression to be at odds with one another, not able to communicate and work together. That can be one of the the majority of frustrating parts of anyone’s foray to the market of healthcare professionals, hospitals and health insurance companies. For this cause alone, it’s essential the present you carefully and thoughtfully decide your healthcare benefits provider

What is The Elgin Mental Healthcare Center? Suppose if a friend of you or someone in their family is to be treated in a mentalcare facility, we try to find the best facility for them. After all, the goal is for them to get well, and we believe that our choice of hospital is vital for the person’s recovery. In Illinois, when we speak of psychiatric facilities, one hospital easily comes to mind. That is Elgin Mental Health Center or EMHC. As the second oldest state hospital in Illinois, this facility opened in 1872 under its former name, Northern Illinois Hospital and Asylum for the Insane. The first-ever physiological measurements of mental patients were recorded by the Elgin Papers back in the 1890s. By 1997, the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations gave EMHC its commendation for two years in a row.

How the hospital was developed can be broken down into five phases. The first phase ended in 1893. A stable leadership was responsible for the gradual growth during this period. After this phase, the hospital immensely grew to more than twice its size. This second phase, which ended by 1920, was characterized by a lot of politicking, leadership changes and power struggles in the system. For the third period, growth was more rapid. Hospital population, which reached its peak by the 1950s, increased for both geriatric and veterans. This is because the period was post World War I and World War II. By the time the third phase ended, hospital population declined. During this phase, psychotropic medications were introduced. Other milestones for this period include the development of community health facilities, deinstitutionalization, until the decentralization of decision-making and authority. This fourth phase ended until the 1980s.

The last phase is what some call the “rebirth.” It began in 1983, when hospital census was at its lowest. Because of this, the hospital was on the verge of closure. However, the state decided to close Manteno Mental Health Center instead. During this time, the hospital was practically rebuilt. While the old buildings used a congregate model called the Kirkbride plan, new physical facilities were added such as cottages in order to adhere to a segregate plan. There are two divisions, civil and forensic. Each division has an acute treatment center, office and conference rooms which faculty and trainees can use. Forensic programs were further developed, and new affiliations with medical schools were also made. Affiliations include that with The Chicago Medical School, among others. An increase in educational activities showed that EMHC is also concerned with the education of future doctors and medical graduates. Hospital system operations were also modified. Activities of community mental health centers are integrated in the system operations. Community mental health centers refer their patients to EMHC. These community mental facilities include DuPage County Health Department, Lake County Mental Health Center, Ecker Center for Mental Health, and Kenneth Young Center.

At present, admissions are close to 1300 annually. Patients are usually African-American, Euro-American and Hispanic. The hospital holds 582 to 600 beds and about 40 full-time physicians. Just like any health facility, EMHC is harassed with problems and controversies with respect to their policies and programs. Nevertheless, Elgin Mental Health Center continues to do what it is supposed to do, and that is to provide the best treatment for their patients.

Reliable diet and exercise information is more accessible than ever before yet every year, Americans continue getting fatter. According to David Kessler, author of The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable Appetite, food manufactures purposely make food their foods irresistible by combining sugar, salt, fat and a pixie dust of chemicals to create an addictive response in the consumer. Thus the more of their garbage you eat, the more you desire and predictably, excess fat is the consequence. Unfortunately, highly processed foods do nothing positive for the brain and body, merely displacing the nutrition required to thrive. Without a wholesome, nutrition-based, source of energy to get through the day, many people–mistakenly–self-medicate with caffeine and other stimulants. Relying on artificial, external sources of stimulation is a poor choice which can lead to adrenaline resistance (and tandem insulin resistance) which can perpetuate weight gain and otherwise discourage good health. Increasing the ante with supplemental fat-burners and thermogenics only worsens the situation. In the long run, fat-burners can potentially make you fatter by screwing up your physiology. Overusing such supplements can create (or aggravate already existing) adrenaline resistance, which in turn causes fat retention, muscle loss, and inflammation.

Most fat burning supplements on the market are stimulant-based, thus they work by increasing the neurotransmitter/hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine. Norepinephrine and epinephrine are catecholamines, secreted by the adrenals, which trigger the “fight or flight” response (also known as an adrenaline rush) providing an energy and strength boost by way of the central nervous system for 2-15 minutes. When facing a legitimate stressor, i.e. an emergency, we rely on these hormones to overcome and persevere. Epinephrine, also referred to as adrenaline, is what gets you out of the bed in the morning; it further gives you an edge every time you take on a challenge. Adrenaline gives us energy for intense workouts and, in the form of norepinephrine, for the mental demands of problem solving.

The problem, as usual, comes from too much of a good thing. Most people in modern society have chronically jacked up adrenaline levels from day-to-day living, and taking stimulant-based fat burners only increases the load on their already overworked adrenal glands. What if you’re on vacation? With no stress in sight? Still, if you take a fat-burning supplement the recommended two to three times a day, you’ll still be increasing your brain’s perception of stress. While epinephrine works in the body, increasing oxygen and glucose levels while suppressing digestive and immune systems, norepinephrine works similarly, but adds a bonus psychoactive element. Thus every time you take a fat burning supplement (or drink a strong cup of coffee) the message to the brain is a consciousness of stress.

Chronically elevated adrenaline always results in adrenaline resistance, a condition wherein the various adrenaline receptors become desensitized. In an adrenaline-sensitive system, adrenaline causes blood sugar to rise (to be burned for energy) while simultaneously releasing lipids into the blood stream (the fat-burning part) thus adrenaline can aid us in breaking down fat deposits for energy. Unfortunately, in an adrenaline-resistant system, since the receptors are dulled, the message is either delayed or worse, never gets through. Thus, the system stores–instead of burning–the available energy sources and, worse yet, tends to store the released lipids into already-existing stubborn fat depots, like hips and thighs in women and love handles and upper back fat in men. In addition to increasing depot fat stores, adrenaline resistance–allowed to run its course–ends with severe energy lows and general fatigue Receptors worn out by chronic stimulation eventually shut down, leaving you lagging all day. Any zeal you once had for life now vaporized like the Las Vegas job market.

Unfortunately, the effects of adrenaline resistance don’t stop at increased fat storage and decreased energy levels. Chronically elevated adrenaline brings inflammation: every secretion of adrenaline triggers a complement of the stress hormone, cortisol, a counter-response to the system’s inflammatory response to adrenaline. Like adrenaline, cortisol–in the appropriate doses–is helpful. The problem, again, is too much of a good thing–when cortisol levels are chronically elevated. In an optimal scenario, cortisol is released to reduce the inevitable inflammation (by way of suppressing the immune response) triggered by adrenaline, and everything is as it should be thus homeostasis ensues. The problem arises when cortisol is chronically released in response to an adrenaline-resistant system–resulting is a continual feedback loop of stress hormones. Worse, unlike adrenaline, cortisol doesn’t release fatty acids for energy, but goes the quick and dirty route of muscle catabolism. So you see, between the fatty acid storage and muscle catabolism, how adrenaline resistance (at least in the realm of optimal body composition) is truly a worst-case scenario.

Building–and retaining–muscle mass is critical to body leanness. If your goals include fat loss, you’ll want to add muscle to improve your ratio of lean body mass to fat–and building muscle is virtually impossible in the face of adrenaline resistance.

          ]]>

We need sufficient testosterone and growth hormone to feel our best and thrive, but the excess cortisol (from the excess adrenaline) pulls the plug on muscle gains on one front by flat-lining production of the anabolic sex hormones. When your central nervous system is in continual survival mode, available energy is no longer delegated to anabolism (i.e. tissue growth and repair) but instead to survival mode (i.e. suppressing inflammation by suppressing the immune system.) Decreased sex hormone production is the kiss of death for muscle gains, fat loss, powerful immunity and a healthy zeal for life. You want to optimize your sex hormone levels and feel great? Here’s the hitch: you must address adrenaline resistance.

When it comes to fat loss, instead of relying on ever-increasing adrenal stimulation (with ever-decreasing returns) focus on what realistically needs to happen to burn the fat off–keep it off. One often overlooked key to fat loss is liver health. The stronger and healthier the liver, the less stubborn fat deposits on the body, since the liver assists in clearing out excess fat-retaining estrogens.

Since toxins are stored in fat cells, the body will stubbornly retain fat in order not to release those stored toxins into the blood stream, since it could overwhelm the system–especially when organs are already stressed. Though you may think it hates you, your body may actually be holding on to that undesired fat to protect your organs.

Knowing this, it makes sense to eat a diet both clean and free of toxins. Consuming ample organic fruits and vegetables provides the liver antioxidants to counter the effects of toxins released from the fat cells. While the nutrition benefit per se of organic food over non-organic food is negligible at best, organic food has less surface toxins from sprays which ideally translates into a lower toxic load on the system, therefore less burden on the liver and finally, decreased stubborn body fat.

Nutritional supplements can play a role in liver health and thus, fat loss. Essential fatty acids are one supplement proven to effective in fat loss, organ health, reducing inflammation and intracellular friction. The good news is that supplements for liver health and stress management also function de facto fat-loss aids. For the liver, milk thistle (silymarin) and the amino acid N-acetyl cysteine are the best value. Milk thistle studies show a rejuvenating effect on cirrhotic livers and N-acetyl cysteine is a precursor to glutathione, which is critical for optimal immune function, protein synthesis and repair. Another multi-faceted supplement for increasing glutathione is R-lipoic acid, which further increases insulin sensitivity in the muscles, thus supporting fat loss and muscle gains.

For stress management, phosphatidylserine (PS) improves mood, cognition, reaction times and has been shown to blunt post-exercise cortisol levels. PS also has a slight ergogenic effect. Phosphatidylserine supplementation is further an effective treatment for the physiologically deteriorative effects of overreaching/overtraining.

Don’t forget the minerals: magnesium and zinc support hormone production–especially testosterone. With every adrenaline release comes a corresponding need for magnesium and other minerals and electrolytes. Magnesium controls muscular contraction, including striated, smooth and cardiac muscle. A good book to read about magnesium and its benefits is The Magnesium Miracle by Carolyn Dean, MD ND. My favorite form of magnesium is transdermal magnesium oil, which has the added value of increasing DHEA levels–minus the negative effects for men–attendant with oral DHEA supplementation. Optimal DHEA levels keep cortisol in check, therefore keeping testosterone from becoming depleted. Magnesium, with its muscle relaxating properties, is best taken as a sleep aid at bedtime.

Another multi-faceted supplement I like for fat loss is resveratrol. Resveratrol, an antioxidant, reduces inflammation, lowers blood sugar, and shows anti-cancer and cardiac-protective benefits as well. Additionally, resveratrol displays anti-aromatase properties–blocking the conversion of testosterone into estrogen. The more fat you have, the more estrogen receptors you have as well and therefore, the more likely you are to be converting testosterone into estrogen. Resveratrol increases metabolic rate and, by stimulating the SIRT1 gene, increases insulin sensitivity. Resveratrol is an all-around winner which almost everyone can benefit from.
Finally, take a page from The Younger (Thinner) You Diet: How Understanding Your Brain Chemistry Can Help You Lose Weight, Reverse Aging and Fight Disease (Eric Braverman, MD) and add three spices to every meal. Spices, such as turmeric, basil, oregano, cumin and rosemary are all anti-inflammatory and good for liver health. Cinnamon is helpful for regulating blood sugar and tastes great in protein shakes and homemade protein bars.

Proper sleep, and other restorative practices, are important–frequently neglected–aspects of fat loss and physical wellness. Without adequate quality sleep (7-9 hours for most) human growth hormone levels will be insufficient. Growth hormone has an anabolic function and is a potent player in body leanness. GH Levels naturally decline after age 25 so you don’t want to further short change yourself by missing sleep. Restoration activities, such as tai chi, yoga, chi-kung and meditation, increase body/breath awareness, thereby improving stress management.

Despite all the above, don’t ensnare yourself in supplement recommendations and miss the big picture! Supplements are merely that: supplements to an optimal diet, exercise and healthful daily routine. Optimize your diet and reduce your stress by creating a healthful routine for yourself. stress. For best results in physical and mental well-being (including fat loss) instead of distracting yourself with pricey supplements, determine the source of the stress in your life and remove or reduce it as best you can.

You can never go wrong taking charge of your life and circumstances. The more self-reliant you feel in your endeavors, the healthier you will be. A few weeks ago, I watched a wildlife show about baboons which illustrated this fact. A primatologist drew blood samples from a wild troop of baboons and analyzed the hormone levels and other bio-markers. The alpha male profiles showed not only optimal sex hormones and but the lowest levels of stress hormones. Further, the alphas had ideal blood pressure. Baboons lower within the social hierarchy, on the other hand, had high levels of cortisol and corresponding degenerative health symptoms, including high blood pressure. The difference? Alpha males (at least while they remain alpha) spend their days as they please, while the other baboons are left to cope with all the inter-tribe displaced aggressions. The lesson? The more sovereignty you feel over your life, the more ease with which you can go about what needs to be accomplished in your lifetime. Feeling at the mercy of others, and other externals beyond your control, wreaks havoc with your hormones and peace of mind.

Looking to optimize your health and win the war against body fat? Address your propensity for adrenaline resistance. In short, if you are one of the stimulant addicted, overcome it. Unlike caffeine and other fat-burners, eating a clean diet supplies real energy to the body and keeps the liver clear of toxins. The healthier your liver, the more efficiently you will shed fat and improve hormonal profiles. If indicated, try the suggested supplements for liver health and hormonal support, but remember: diet, exercise and supplements aren’t enough in themselves. If you have a stressful attitude toward your life, you can count yourself among the adrenaline resistant. Don’t go there! Why not take responsibility for your life and, instead of managing symptoms of stress, rout them and liberate yourself.
